Karijini possesses an awesome beauty. The refreshing coolness of the pools is in marked contrast to the rugged red walls of the gorges. Young macho guys visiting the falls are undaunted by the spate of recent accidents. They scaled the walls alongside Fortescue Falls and dived full length into the abyss.

Karijini Vistors Centre

Shaped from steel curves with a natural rust finish, the Karijini Vistors Centre is architecturally stylish and innovative. Photographers can make use of the natural viewing apertures to frame their images in black borders.

Beasley River

Its amazing what you find along the Nanutarra-Munjina Rd! There we were brushing the bush flies away and knocking back Phill's salads when this taxi entourage pulls in carrying a couple of German tourists. It was all a part of Toursim Australia's big pronmo in the outback. The taxi meter registered just over $1000. The taxi was accompanied by an RAC vehicle plus two other 4WD's as support vehicles.

Outback adventure

A part of the fun of travel and photography in the Aussie outback is the freedom and lack of crowds. There's space to move and air to breathe. Nobody's going to stand in front of you. You can wear what you like and like what you wear. And when you poke your head out of your tent in the morning its a relief to know that there's no-one trying to flog you transport, a necklace or time-share!

Photographers have a love-hate relationship with dust. Dust provides great atmospherics, especially when back lit. But dust on your sensor spells disaster.

We were very lucky. We escaped unscathed from our Karijini tour. Photographers need to take special care. They are often carrying a lot of photographic gear and tripods. Photographers are also vulnerable to being preoccupied with the view instead of looking where their next footstep is going!

The walk down to Fortescue Falls is relatively easy; the water refreshingly cool. You can here your voice echo from the red gorge walls.

Wittenoom Gorge

Wittenoom was the first 'real' gorge we came upon. The lasting impression for me was that we were the ONLY ones there. How many places in the world can you photograph such amazing landscapes and be all alone.

Wittenoom earned the dubious reputation of being the most infamous town in Western Australia with asbestos-related deaths. Today, its almost a ghost town. Buildings are deserted and roads are overgrown with weeds and breaking up. I heard the voices of the few remaining residents calling out off the darkness.

After two days travelling we are camped at the Capricorn Roadhouse 20 km south of Newman. THe cooks have just prepared Apricot Chicken ans Peaches and Custard for desert. All our little tents are set up - set up in the dark again. Great trip so far i soaking up the outback from Wongan Hills, Payne's Find, Meekathhara and Kumerina Roadhouse. Huge road trains on the road and penty of evidence of road kills. I loved the sign in the Payne's Find bar 'You kill it, we grill it'.

'twas the Night before Departure

Last minute boot clean. I've packed 4 cameras - Nikon D700. Fuji S5 Pro, Canon G7 and, believe it or not .... a Nikon F100 film camera!! I even went down to Camera House in Freo and bought two rolls of Fuji Velvia - 50ISO and 100ISO. Had to take out a bank loan to buy them - but they're what I want for star trails.

Great idea Dale. I thought I would post a few images from my Karijini trip last year. Just to whet the appetite as to how amazing the scenery is up north. I was working last year and didn't have as much time as I would like for my own photography. I can't wait until this weekend wheI can really get my teeth into some serious shooting.
